Stopniowanie przymiotników i porównania

Comparatives and superlatives

Stopniowanie przymiotników: -er/-est czy more/most, zasady pisowni, wyjątki (good, bad, far), than, as…as, the… the… oraz typowe błędy i ćwiczenia.

W skrócie

Krótkie przymiotniki stopniujesz końcówkami -er i -est (cheap: cheaper: the cheapest), a dłuższe słowami more i most (expensive, more expensive, the most expensive). Po stopniu wyższym porównujesz przez than, a równość wyrażasz przez as… as. Kilka przymiotników odmienia się nieregularnie: good, better, best, bad, worse, worst.

Kiedy -er/-est, a kiedy more/most

Kiedy -er/-est, a kiedy more/most
Typ przymiotnikaStopień wyższyStopień najwyższy
jednosylabowe: cheap, tall, oldcheaper, taller, olderthe cheapest, the tallest, the oldest
dwusylabowe zakończone na -y: happy, easy, busyhappier, easier, busierthe happiest, the easiest, the busiest
pozostałe dwusylabowe: modern, careful, boringmore modern, more careful, more boringthe most modern, the most careful, the most boring
trzy- i więcej sylabowe: expensive, interestingmore expensive, more interestingthe most expensive, the most interesting

Niektóre dwusylabowe przymiotniki mają obie formy: clever, cleverer / more clever, quiet, quieter / more quiet, narrow, simple, gentle, polite. Przymiotniki jednosylabowe zakończone na -ed stopniujesz przez more: bored, more bored, tired, more tired.

  • My brother is taller than me. Mój brat jest wyższy ode mnie.
  • This is the most interesting book I've ever read. To najciekawsza książka, jaką kiedykolwiek czytałem.
  • The exam was easier than I expected. Egzamin był łatwiejszy, niż się spodziewałem.

Pisownia

  • spółgłoska + -y → y zmienia się w i: dry, drier, funny, funnier, the funniest

badworsethe worst
farfarther / furtherthe farthest / the furthest
much / manymorethe most
little (ilość)lessthe least
old (o rodzinie, przed rzeczownikiem)elderthe eldest

Further i farther przy odległości znaczą to samo (w AmE częściej farther); further znaczy też „dalszy, dodatkowy”: further information. Elder/eldest używasz głównie przed rzeczownikiem przy rodzeństwie (my elder sister), ale nie z than: She's older than me.

Porównania: than, as… as, less, the… the…

  • than po stopniu wyższym: Trains are faster than buses. Po than w mowie zwykle stoi zaimek w formie dopełnienia (than me), w stylu formalnym, podmiot z czasownikiem (than I am). Forma than I bez czasownika brzmi bardzo formalnie.
  • as… as, tak… jak: She's as tall as her mother. Przeczenie: not as/so… as, nie tak… jak: It's not as cold as yesterday.
  • less / the least: mniej / najmniej, z każdym przymiotnikiem: less expensive, the least popular. W mowie częściej używa się not as… as.
  • the same as, taki sam jak; different from, inny niż.
  • wzmocnienie stopnia wyższego: much, far, a lot (o wiele), a bit, slightly (trochę): much better, a bit cheaper. Nie używasz very przed stopniem wyższym.
  • the… the…: im… tym…: The sooner, the better. The more you practise, the easier it gets.
  • coraz: powtórzenie: bigger and bigger, more and more expensive.
  • Your phone is much better than mine. Twój telefon jest dużo lepszy od mojego.
  • This flat isn't as big as the last one.
  • It's getting colder and colder. Robi się coraz zimniej.
  • The more I learn, the less I know. Im więcej się uczę, tym mniej wiem.

Stopień najwyższy: the, in, of

Przed stopniem najwyższym zwykle stoi the (lub zaimek dzierżawczy: my best friend). Po nim miejsce lub grupę wprowadzasz przez in (the tallest building in the world, the best student in the class), a okres lub grupę elementów przez of (the best day of my life, the youngest of three children).

  • Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. Mount Everest to najwyższa góra na świecie.
  • That was the worst day of my life.

Po angielsku zawsze używasz than, nie from ani of. Polskie „bardziej” odpowiada more, ale nie łączysz go z formą na -er: more happy bywa używane, more happier, nigdy.

Typowe błędy Polaków

  • She is more taller than me. → She is taller than me. Nie łączysz more z końcówką -er, to podwójne stopniowanie.
  • He is older from me. → He is older than me. Porównanie zawsze przez than, nie from (kalka z „starszy ode mnie”).
  • It's the most cheap hotel. → It's the cheapest hotel. Krótkie przymiotniki stopniujesz końcówką -est.
  • This is gooder / the baddest. → This is better / the worst. Good i bad stopniują się nieregularnie.
  • This film is very better. → This film is much better. Stopień wyższy wzmacniasz przez much, far, a lot, nie very.
  • the biggest city of Poland → the biggest city in Poland Po stopniu najwyższym miejsce wprowadzasz przez in.
  • My sister is elder than me. → My sister is older than me. Elder nie łączy się z than; używasz go przed rzeczownikiem: my elder sister.
