Reporting verbs — suggest, deny, accuse i inne

Reporting verbs and their patterns

Reporting verbs po angielsku: suggest, admit, deny, warn, offer, refuse, accuse, apologise, insist, tabela wzorów (to, -ing, that), błędy Polaków i ćwiczenia.

Każdy z nich ma swój wzór: np. promise to do, warn somebody not to do, deny doing, accuse somebody of doing, suggest doing lub suggest that….

Said i told są neutralne.

  • “I'll help you, I promise.” → She promised to help me. Obiecała, że mi pomoże.
  • “I'm sorry I forgot your birthday.” → He apologised for forgetting my birthday. Przeprosił, że zapomniał o moich urodzinach.
  • “Don't touch the wire!” → The electrician warned us not to touch the wire. Elektryk ostrzegł nas, żebyśmy nie dotykali przewodu.

Suggest i recommend, najczęstsza pułapka

Tabela
WzórPrzykładUwagi
suggest + -ingHe suggested going to the cinema.propozycja wspólna lub ogólna
suggest that sb should doHe suggested that I should see a doctor.częste w BrE
suggest that sb doHe suggested that I see a doctor.forma podstawowa (subjunctive), typowa dla AmE i stylu formalnego
suggest that sb did / doesHe suggested that I saw a doctor.zwykły czas, potoczne BrE
suggest + rzeczownikShe suggested a walk.proste i naturalne
błądHe suggested me to see a doctor.niepoprawne

Recommend zachowuje się podobnie: I recommend booking early, I recommend that you book early. Więcej o formie podstawowej po suggest znajdziesz w Subjunctive, it's time, would rather, as if, tryb łączący.

Warn, remind, advise, persuade, osoba + to

Przeczenie: not to, przed bezokolicznikiem.

  • The guide warned us not to feed the animals. Przewodnik ostrzegł nas, żebyśmy nie karmili zwierząt.
  • My mum reminded me to take an umbrella. Mama przypomniała mi, żebym wziął parasol.
  • The doctor advised him to stop smoking. Lekarz poradził mu, żeby rzucił palenie.
  • We persuaded Ola to join the team. Namówiliśmy Olę, żeby dołączyła do zespołu.
  • They invited us to stay for dinner. Zaprosili nas, żebyśmy zostali na kolację.

Warn ma też inne wzory: warn sb against doing (He warned me against buying a used car) oraz warn sb that… (She warned us that the road was icy).

Explain, complain, announce, czasowniki + that

Tabela
CzasownikPrzykład
explain (to sb) thatShe explained to me that the shop was closed.
complain (to sb) that / aboutHe complained that the room was too cold.
announce thatThe pilot announced that we were starting our descent.
agree that / agree to doWe agreed that it was a good idea. / They agreed to wait.
claim that / claim to doHe claimed that he had never met her. / He claimed to be a doctor.

Typowe błędy Polaków

  • He suggested me to go to the doctor. → He suggested (that) I (should) go to the doctor. / He suggested going to the doctor. Użyj -ing albo zdania z that.
  • She denied to take the money. → She denied taking the money. / She denied that she had taken the money.
  • He explained me the rules. → He explained the rules to me. Explain wymaga przyimka to przed osobą.
  • They accused him for stealing. → They accused him of stealing. Accuse sb of doing, przyimek of (ale blame sb for doing).
  • She apologised for be late. → She apologised for being late. Po przyimku (for) stoi forma -ing.
  • He insisted to pay for dinner. → He insisted on paying for dinner. Insist łączy się z on + -ing albo z that.
  • The teacher warned us to not be late. → The teacher warned us not to be late. W standardowej angielszczyźnie not stoi przed to. Forma to not be spotyka się w mowie, ale w pracy pisemnej wybierz not to.
